New Year's Eve Bat Mitzvah

Earlier this week my friend Amy (of the famous Jersey Shore Shark Attack  party) and I threw a New Year's Eve party, on, you guessed it, New Year's Eve.  Normally I wouldn't throw a party two weeks after getting married (or after any other large party) but the theme we had was one time only and too good not to use. New Year's Bat Mitzvah! Because the millennium turned 13! (Or 12 for those who a-believe the millennium started in 2001 and/or b-believe Bat Mitzvah's happen when you are 12). Plus I had an amazing co-host (and a co-host roommate who helped A LOT).

Happy Bat Mitzvah, Millennium.

The millennium did not read from the Torah but we did have all the other key components of a Bat Mitzvah party:

A Killer Invite
Amy did an amazing job. Since I work with graphic all the time at my job and Amy has the writing degree, naturally I wrote the text while she did the graphics.

Our New Year's Eve Millennium Bat Mitzvah invite, complete with sparkles

A Great Theme
The theme was "party like a rockstar." It was in fact a kind of meta-theme--the theme of the party was NYE Bat Mitzvah, and the theme of the Bat Mitzvah was "party like a rockstar." Yes, out party had a META theme. You know you wish you were us. The meta-theme was carried through in the decorations, almost all purchased from Oriental Trading, who really did a superb job of supplying us with Bat Mitzvah style decor, including inflatable microphones and guitars, sparkly handing music notes, guitar food trays, and banners. The theme was also carried though in the playlist.
Party food in guitar trays. And obligatory table glitter, because this was an Amy party.

An Awesome/Awkward Playlist
We kicked the night off with "Get the Party Started" by Pink, so you know we were doing it right. We included classic awkward dance song like "The Electric Slide" and "Y.M.C.A" and pop hits from the 80s and 90s that were featured at our Bat Mitzvahs, as well as slightly more current hits, because how are you not going to play "Party in the U.S.A." or "Call Me Maybe"?  (If you have Spotify you can hear our playlist if you follow this link)

Bar with tiaras, inflatable guitars, and inflatable microphones, to help everyone party like rockstars.

Classic Activities
We watched the ball drop in Times Square, in the only proper time zone to do it on, and we shared stories of our having, attending, and not having attended Bar and Bat Mitzvahs as kids. We also had a traditional Bat Mitzvah activity invented by American D.J.s, the candle lighting ceremony, in which the guests were called up to light candles. Finally, we played that classic Bat Mitzvah game, Cards Against Humanity. Okay, that one was just fun.
The cake, with more table glitter.

How did you spend New Year's Eve? And, in Bat Mitzvah tradition, let's focus on what we DID instead of what we intend/resolve to do. What did you accomplish in 2012?

Happy New Year, and Mazel Tov Millennium. Who's a rockstar?

  2. I loved the candle lighting part, which I had never experienced before, never having attended a Bat Mitzvah!
